Scientists Create First Synthetic Cell – WSJ.com

WSJ has an article on how commercial scientists have announced their creation of a cell with a synthetic genome.  They call it a synthetic cell, which I think is a bit of a stretch, but I’m just as terrified.

Scientists Create First Synthetic Cell

Pretty exciting medicinal and industrial possibilities, but it doesn’t take much thinking to conceive of a how the dark side of mankind’s nature might apply it to warfare.  I was already worried about a “grey goo” style end of the world, but now I wonder if I might live long enough to actually witness it happen.

I hate to highjack your blog’s comments, but stackoverflow doesnt have a messaging system.
My question for you is related to your post here -> http://stackoverflow.com/questions/369558/web-based-game-development-flex-builder-or-flash-cs3/373666#373666 .

I was wondering if you knew of any resources that detail this process?

Currently I have a friend that has made some great character animations, but I have no idea how to turn the animations into useful assets that I can apply to unique objects, and I have had little luck searching around on the topic.

In response to your post. If we did end up upon the tech to create a grey goo incident I sure hope we had the tech to create a virus or something that would essentially prevent the synthetic cells from replicating.
